About Us

Alpine Base & Edge outside the store

Alpine Base & Edge started operations in November of 2005. The shop began as a specialty ski and snowboard tuning center where customers can get a professional, custom tune, purchase quality ski tuning equipment and waxes, and receive advice about tuning techniques as well as learn how to maintain their own equipment. I am the owner, Peter Boyer, and started tuning skis while attending Stratton Mountain School in Vermont in 1975. Sharp edges and fast bases were a must on the hard pack conditions found at eastern ski areas, so all the students at the school had to master ski tuning by hand. My passion for tuning was at first a necessary component of my competitive skiing, grew into an obsession, and has now morphed into a business. My suspicion that a specialty tuning center would be a great idea was confirmed when one of my first customers said, "Wow, I've been waiting for a shop like this to open. I'm so glad I can finally get my skis tuned by someone who knows what they're doing!" I have two very experienced tuners helping me in the shop. We are all certified binding mechanics as well as ski/board tuning professionals with a passion for custom tuning skis and boards for competition.

Personalized service, experienced high quality workmanship, and a dedication to the latest tuning technology available formed the foundation of the business' mission. I believe that properly tuned equipment enables riders to maximize their technique and carving experience. Today's skis and snowboards require specific edge geometry, unique base structures based on technique and snow conditions, and custom waxing/finishing. When your equipment is tuned at Alpine Base & Edge you can be assured of optimum performance on the snow. Plus, your skis will be tuned according to your ability and style of riding. Alpine Base & Edge guarantees all tunes - if you don't like the way your ride is performing after having it worked on, bring it back and we'll adjust the tune for you for free. Alpine Base & Edge tunes all year long so bring in your equipment during the summer and avoid the rush at the start of ski season!

Alpine Base & Edge inside the store

The shop provides tuning and repair services for Alpine Race and Recreational, Telemark, and Back Country skis, as well as Snowboards and Alpine Carving Boards. Racing Tunes, Custom Edge Geometry and Base Structuring are the shop's specialty. We own the latest racing stone grinders and other machinery from Wintersteiger. This equipment is maintained in top condition to produce the finest ski tunes available in the shortest possible time. Our attention to detail combined years of tuning experience yields precision workmanship that must be skied to be appreciated. We can mount almost any binding (as long as we have the jig) and test every binding installation. There is an I-beam available to inspect skis and boards on as well as a "Hot Box" for initial ski base preparation and new this season is the “Wax Future” Infra-Red waxing station From Montana Sport of Switzerland. New ski/board preparation is essential prior to use. Alpine Base & Edge will make sure that your new base is flat and structured, the edges properly beveled to the manufacturer’s or customer’s specifications (sharp & smooth) and that a least two waxes (one Molybdenum/Graphite, one Hydrocarbon) are hand ironed on to the base to ensure maximum glide performance.

Guaranteed 24 Hour Turn Around

We guarantee a 24 hour turn around on all Tuning and Mounting services. We know your time is precious and understand that it is hard to plan ahead sometimes. So, if you need a tune at the last minute, purchased some new skis and bindings you need mounted and "just have to ride on", or require a release check on your bindings, come drop off your skis or board and we'll get them dialed in for you. We'll call you as soon as they are ready for pick- up, or come back the next day at the same time and they'll be waiting for you. We do have a "While - You - Wait" tuning surcharge of $20.00 if we have the time available to tune your ride immediately, should that be something you require. Just ask one of our tuning technicians if there is room to fit you in. Rest assured that we will always do our best to get your equipment back to you in a timely manner. We also guarantee all our work. So if you don't like the way your skis are tuned, bring them back within a week and we'll re-tune them for free. Remember that all tuning customers at Alpine Base & Edge get a free Shop Logo Base/Edge Protection Ski Strap!

Free Tuning Clinics!

Alpine Base & Edge offers free tuning clinics every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., starting in October and ending in March. These clinics are designed to help you learn the basics of ski and board tuning so you can maintain your equipment throughout the season and between major tunes. Edge de-burring, p- tex repair, edge sharpening and beveling, and hand hot waxing and brushing of the structure are covered in three one hour sessions. You can bring your skis if you wish, but it is not necessary. We are always available to lend professional advice on all tuning and waxing techniques and can help you learn to use your tuning tools. Attendees are treated to a 20% discount on all tools and waxes purchased during/after the clinic!

Rent a Ski Tuning Bench by the Hour and Tune Them Yourself!

Due to our expanded work space, Alpine Base & Edge is once again offering hourly rental of two Toko World Cup Ski Tuning Benches, including a three point World Cup Vise (snowboard and extra wide alpine vises are available), all hand tools, shop apron, base cleaning solution, P-Tex, waxing iron, wax, and brushes. You'll be provided with everything you need to bevel and sharpen your edges, make minor base repairs, and professionally finish your ski bases. This is a great way to put in to practice all the techniques we teach at our free bi-weekly (Tuesdays & Thursdays 6-7 p.m.) ski tuning clinics! The bench rental cost is $20.00 per hour, and grinding services (belt and stone) are available at a reduced price (50% off) for Bench Rental Customers. Sorry, but you'll have to leave the grinding to the pros! So, come in, roll up your sleeves, and tune your ride in the comfort of our heated back shop. After you learn the basics, you should be able to completely tune two pairs of skis in one hour. Plus, well clean up your mess! Tuning tips, from our seasoned professional staff, are complimentary!

On a Personal Note...

Customers are always welcome to come in for free ski/board tuning advice, ask questions about equipment selection, get the latest ski report from your favorite Colorado area, or just hang out and watch a little T.V., "talk shop" or listen to some great tunes. Espresso is complimentary for customers and just $1 for everyone else. Yes, I make a mean cup of coffee too! Tips are not necessary, but good beer or wine is always welcomed and will be shared after the grinders are off! Please come in and share your winter adventures, feel free to drop off a ski photo or two (they'll be displayed on the wall right away!), or let me know about up-coming events so I can spread the word!

I look forward to seeing all of you at Alpine Base & Edge!
